How to Stay Fit This Winter
With all of this cold weather, it can be tempting to just stay indoors, curled up and comfy. However, in order to reach your fitness goals, you’re going to need to leave the warmth of the couch behind. Here are some inventive new ways to stay in shape while stuck indoors this winter.
Take a class
Instead of merely putting in another hour on the treadmill, mix it up and try something new by enrolling in a class at your local gym. There are bound to be a variety of fun group workouts that will have you moving along in no time. Consider cycling, rock climbing, ice skating, dancing, martial arts, Pilates, boxing, rowing, crossfit, or even yoga. By investing in classes, you’ll be putting your money where your mouth is and therefore less likely to skip out. Activities like this are also already choreographed to get you a good workout at a set time, so they’re easy to fit into your schedule.
If you’re looking for an alternative exercise and something more low-impact, find an indoor swimming pool where you can do laps, practice your strokes, or even participate in water aerobics. According to Women’s Health Magazine, “No other workout burns calories, boosts metabolism, and firms every muscle in your body (without putting stress on your joints) better than a swimming workout.” Swimming also has a way of reducing stress levels and can be done at any age or skill level.
Play with a team
If you’re seeking a competitive atmosphere, join an indoor league like basketball, dodgeball, racquetball, or soccer. Though they’re just pick-up games, you’ll be surprised at how much of a sweat you can work up.
Stay at home
There's a lot to be gained from a home gym in that you’ll always be able to fit in a workout and with plenty of privacy to boot. If you’re on a budget, exercising without any equipment is also a real possibility. You can do planks, lunges, and jumping jacks or find a YouTube video that you can exercise to. Even a jump rope is as good a cardio workout as anything else.
Get active wear
Wearing the right outfit can sometimes be all the motivation you need to get moving. Set your gear out ahead of time as a reminder for the next day and take pride in how you look.
Make a fun playlist
Create a list of tunes that will help you push yourself harder. If you get to listen to your favorite music every time you work out, you might even start looking forward to exercising.

Get a workout buddy or trainer

Don’t use the weather as an excuse to stop taking caring of yourself. Even if you’re stuck inside, you can still work out for at least a few minutes each day. Start creating healthy habits now that will last all year, and you’ll be sure to thank yourself later.
